ExxonMobil’s Rovuma LNG project has taken another major step towards development in Mozambique. The SMDC joint venture — comprising Saipem, McDermott International, Daewoo Engineering & Construction, and China Petroleum Engineering & Construction Corporation (CPECC) — has secured a Letter of Intent covering engineering and limited procurement for the 18.6 mtpa Rovuma LNG development.
Key project details
The project spans 18.6 mtpa of capacity across two liquefaction trains, supplied by the deepwater Mamba complex in Area 4. Initial LoI work is valued at approximately US$32 million, with the full EPC award subject to a final investment decision. FID is targeted in 2026, with start-up planned for 2031. Development will take place at Afungi, Cabo Delgado, alongside TotalEnergies’ 13 mtpa Mozambique LNG project. McDermott has cited estimates that Rovuma LNG could generate around US$150 billion in revenues for Mozambique over 30 years.
What this means for clients
With two major LNG developments now progressing at Afungi, Mozambique is strengthening its position as a potential long-term supplier to global gas markets. Companies in the EPC, engineering, logistics and supply-chain space should track the FID timeline closely, as award activity is likely to accelerate once the decision is confirmed.
